Styling knee length or longer hair
I just trimmed my hair. It was about halfway between my knees and calves, and now it's a few inches shorter, probably at the back of my knees. I'm thinking about doing something new with it, but I don't know if I'm willing to sacrifice much length.
Does anyone have layers, side bangs, or any other style with knee length or longer hair? Or know where I can find pictures for inspiration?
I definitely don't want short bangs. Ideally, if I cut bangs, they'll be very long side bangs that I can part with the rest of my hair if I feel like it. I don't like the idea of being stuck with bangs all the time.
But I'm not even sure if it looks right to embellish your haircut in any way, once it's this long. I'm just tired of it being soooooo thick (about 5" ponytail circumfrence) and hanging around me like a big curtain all the time. One of my friends compared it to a nun's veil, LOL.
Any suggestions or pictures? (In the form of links, since I don't have 25 posts yet)

By "styling" you're meaning cutting bangs, etc? Do you wear your hair down all the time? What if you try learning some new buns/braids/updos that will give your hair a different look and also keep it out of the way when you need?

Re: Styling knee length or longer hair
An idea of sorts:
Of course my hair is nowhere near your length, but what you could do is create a larger bun on top of the French braid.
This was simply a Dutch French braid down the center of the hair which was looped up the side and the tassle threaded through a section where the braid began. The braid was pulled thru that section then coiled in a small bun above the Dutch braid.
Hair is braided semi loosely to make it more supple when forming the "U" at the bottom. I used a Topsy Tail tool to do the actual threading thru the section at the top.
A slight variation of this is putting your hair in a ponytail, dividing it in two sections, then loosely twisting the 2 sections together down to the ends, then bringing the end up and thru where the twists began and threading them thru a section, and winding the remaining hair around the ponytail base.

Re: Styling knee length or longer hair
Thank you for the suggestions, but I guess I should have been clearer in my post. There are a lot of different buns, braids, and other hairstyles that I like to wear, but I would like my hair to look better when it's just down. I don't like the shape created by the thickness—it widens at the bottom and creates a boxy shape that swallows me up. It's like a big drape over my head.
I also would like to have some hair framing my face when I wear updos. I have sort of a weird hairline and when I pull my hair completely back, it's not that flattering.
Nevertheless, Madora, I will definitely try that hairstyle! Braided updos are gorgeous, I love them.

I guess I am not seeing the problem you are seeing with your hair! Your profile pic shows very pretty hair with a nice hairline. If you dont like the fullness at your ends, bangs are not going to help that. If you dont like a blunt cut, then you could change your hemline to a U or a V.

Re: Styling knee length or longer hair
Perhaps, instead of bangs (which, although cute, I am naturally against due to how long they take to grow out) you could try some subtle layers, or a different hemline. Bangs frame your face, but so do the "wispies" some people have. Maybe you could have those cut in? They would be longer than bangs, and easier to hide if you want them hidden.

Re: Styling knee length or longer hair
Maybe whispies are what I'm thinking of? I'd probably have to see a picture. But it would be nice to have some hair at the front short enough to pull over my shoulders. It would make my hair in the back less thick and it would look less severe from the front. (With my current length, if I pull any to the front, it just gets tangled up in my legs when I walk, LOL)

Re: Styling knee length or longer hair
Reading this thread made me remember how boring I kept my hair when it was longer. I definitively need inspiration, now that I'm growing it longer again. I dont know if I will ever reach back to kneelength though. I had it in a sort of U-shape when it was that long and it was definitively catching up on everything. I had sidebangs, but not deliberately. They just got there because of me using headbands and such so the hair wore out. So just keep coming with the ideas, folks! Need inspiration here and something to look forward too. Whispies was not so great on my fine hair. They were a constant aggravation and looked like someone given me a lightening shock. If your hair is heavier I suppose this will work out fine. Could probably be very beautiful on the right person. Please tell us what you decide, Wallflower.

I would try a hemline change myself if my ends were thicker.Originally Posted by longhairedlady

If you want change to how your updos look, I recommend learning updos that add more volume to the top of your head. French braiding for example, gives a different look from the front than a low nape bun. I just learned this updo, and it is a good example of the softer look I am mentioning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL2jGJvMBI4
You can also gently pull out some wispies from your temples. Even with knee-length hair myself, I still have a few of these. They are just a couple inches long and even though they are not dramatic, they really change your look. I normally tuck mine in to keep them out of my glasses, but I like being a tight-bunned mean little old lady club member.

Re: Styling knee length or longer hair
Thanks for all the suggestions. Today when I trimmed my hair I made a U hemline, which I think looks better, but it still doesn't help the face that the shape the thickness of my hair creates is unattractive. Here's a picture to illustrate what I mean:

Her hair looks fine, but see how it widens the further down it goes? Now imagine that on knee length hair, and you'll see my problem.
I want my hair to be more like this:
